Foundational Skills:

Pawns lead the attack

Pawns are the most abundant piece on the board. Using them to lead attack will let them be great guards and sacrificial pieces.

Piece Value

  • Pawn: 1 point

  • Knight: 3 points

  • Bishop: 3 points

  • Rook: 5 points

  • Queen: 9 points

Openings

Openings in chess are the few starting moves that you will do. Generally, it is good to know 2-3 when facing other people. This is to have a strong start which can be transferred to winning the game easier.

Path and Goal

When starting, it is best to set a goal and a time limit. This is to have a sense of urgency and dedication to learn better and faster. For example, most people can reach 600 elo in chess.com after a month of playing. You can set that as a goal or aim slightly higher like 700.

Play and Learn

Playing a bunch of games will slowly improve your skill level, to make this improvement faster, it is best to review your games. Look back at the match and see where you made great moves and mistakes. Being aware of good moves and avoiding bad moves, will quickly improve your skill level than blinding doing a bunch of games.

Stages of Improvement:

What is Elo?

Elo is the rating in chess to show skill level in a numerical way. For example, someone with 2000 elo should beat someone will 1000 elo the vast majority of the time. We are using chess.com Elo ratings for the stage estimations.

Stage 1:

This is where someone doesn't know how or where the pieces move. This Elo would 100-400.

Stage 2:

This is where someone knows many openings and can put up a fight against most players. Typically achieved after months of playing. This would be elo 800-1200.

Stage 3:

This is where someone has dedicated most of their life to chess and knows the game in and out. This is typically achieved after 10 years of playing. This elo would be 2000+.
